Graduation day is August 3 at 12 Noon sharp. Travel time to Camp Pendleton is approximately 6-7 hours or longer. It is recommended that parents travel on Friday, Aug. 2 (or earlier) to hotel/motel locations in San Clemente, Oceanside or Carlsbad, California. San Clemente is closer to the Basilone Road entrance into Camp Pendleton. Your Devil Pup will write a letter from camp which you will need to produce to get onto the base. Please remember to take it with you. Be prepared to show ID and insurance information for your vehicle if requested.
Devil Pups is a non-profit organization designed to help teens 14-17 from all backgrounds gain self-confidence and learn to take responsibility for their actions. People wonder “Why the name Devil Pups?” The term “Devil Dogs” was used by German soldiers to describe Marines fighting in World War I. The Marines who organized this youth citizenship program chose the term “Devil Pups” to describe the quality of teen who can complete this program.

Sugar Cookies! Devil Pup Style
Part
of the fun that the instructors have at Devil Pups camp is making sugar cookies
with the pups. It is a valuable bonding experience. I don't mean a baking session. Making sugar cookies with the pups entails
having the pups get soaking wet either by going into the ocean or by a fire
hose or by a mud run. Once they are
soaking wet, the instructors will command the pups to Make Sugar Cookies, which
means the pups will roll around in the sand and get every square inch of their
bodies "sugar coated." Then
they will do exercises. It is an
uncomfortable, albeit unforgettable and delicious experience.
In
order for the pups to be prepared for making sugar cookies at camp, I would
like to make sugar cookies with them at this Thursday's training. We have permission to use the sand volleyball
court at the Washington Rec Center for this purpose.
The
pups will love it! My concern, however, is
how they will prepare themselves for the ride home in the car. We will be able to get most of the sand off
but there may be some remaining sand on them that might make a mess in the
car. Get with your pup and get creative
about how to minimize the mess, and how they will remediate any mess by doing a
thorough cleaning of the car. This
notice serves as warning that sugar cookie training will be next Thursday, and
measures should be in place for special preparation, and permission/exclusion
will be requested. If any parent does
not want their pup to participate, or if you have any questions, please contact
me.
Pictures/videos
will be taken.
