Kyle Grable Receives Award

10 Nov 2017, Donna Toole and Kyle Grable
Commandant Al Lieski of the Utah State Department, Marine Corps League, honored Kyle Grable with a plaque for his accomplishments over the course of two Devil Pup seasons.  Kyle just missed qualifying for 2016 Devil Pup camp, but went on to work out and prepare and in the process lost 50 pounds.  He returned for 2017 tryouts and is now one of our honored Devil Pup graduates.  Congratulations, Kyle!!

26 Oct 2017 - Honors from State of Utah Marine Corps League

26 Oct 2017 at Dixie High AFJROTC building, St. George, Utah
2017 Devil Pup graduates being honored by Utah State Department Commandant Albert Lieske.  Sr. Vice Commandant of the Utah Dixie Detachment #1270, Larry Mineer, was on hand (right above) to assist the Commandant with awards.  Each Pup received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Department, a challenge coin, and top achievers, Alena and Tanner, received plaques for their efforts.  Commandant's talk was inspiring and motivating, and we were so honored for his visit from Logan, UT.  Many thanks to Col. Kenneth Field of Dixie High AFJROTC and Col. Thomas Brown and SMSgt Thomas of Pine View High AFJROTC for setting up this event.  More photos to follow when Marine Fortune's photos are available.

2017 Oct 26 - Marine Corps League Award

2017 Devil Pups:  The date and time has been set for the Marine Corps League State Commandant to come to St. George to award certificates to those of you who successfully completed the 2017 Devil Pup camp.  We are honored to have Commandant Lieske recognize our Devil Pup graduates!!

Commandant Lieske will be here on Thursday, the 26th, at 1:00 p.m. at the Dixie High AFJROTC building (with Alena and Adrian coming from Pine View for this event).  I am hoping that it is OK with everyone involved if the Devil Pups wear their Devil Pup uniforms on Thursday.  We will have the photographer from the local Marine Corps League there to take photographs.

See you Thursday.

2017 Sep 12 Thanking the D.A.R. Chapter

The final stop on our Thank You Tour was at the Color Country Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution monthly meeting.  They are now meeting in the American Legion Post 90 building in St. George.  We thanked them with a Certificate of Appreciation, an 8x10 glossy photo of all the 2017 Devil Pup graduates after the graduation ceremony at Camp Pendleton - and with super catchy big smiles from five outstanding Devil Pup graduates.  SMSgt. Thomas from Pine View's AFJROTC program attended, as did Col. Field from Dixie High School AFJROTC.  A big thank you to the parents who made time in the middle of their day to bring the Pups to this event.  Thank you Pine View and Dixie AFJROTC programs for attending this thank you event as part of your school day.

Thank you Color Country Chapter NSDAR.
We appreciate your support!

Congratulations, Devil Pup Graduates

We graduated another 10 Devil Pups this past weekend.  Attached is a video clip of the Pups marching onto parade ground. There is a little wind noise - very windy day at Camp Pendleton.

Not only did we have 10 Pups graduate, Alena Lorentzen captured one of the few PFT awards.  They must score a perfect 400 to earn this award.
Alena is second from left in the front row.  I asked them to remove their caps so we could see their buzz cuts, but some of the guys must have felt chilly!!!

A new Individual Award was added to the Devil Pup Graduation Ceremony this year.  It's called "The Colonel Bill Toole Award" and is presented for demonstration of extraordinary persistence and includes a $200 cash gift.

Congratulations to all ten of you!  See you at Awards Night (details to follow).

10 More St. George Area Devil Pups

Congratulations, 2017 Devil Pups.  And congratulations to Alena Lorentzen for her special award for PFT excellence.

Here are the 2017 graduates.  Jan Veltkamp made the St. George guide on to make us even more professional!  Thanks, Jan!☺

A new award was added this year - the Colonel Bill Toole award for exceptional persistence - it carries a $200 cash award.

We will announce Awards Night at the Pizza Factory as soon as I can get that coordinated with the restaurant.

Good job, 2017 pups.  Well done!

Workout on Saturday, July 1st

Because of JROTC Orientation this week, there will be no Tuesday and Thursday workouts - so Saturday is even more important.  Plan to be back on schedule this coming Saturday!!

2017 DEVIL PUP CAMP WINNERS

Here's to the winners for 2017 Devil Pup Camp:

Richard Armstrong
Kyle Grable
Adrian Lopez
Tanner Roberts
JT Ybright
Sayuri Catalan
Emma Johnson
Alena Lorentzen

Parents:  Now is the time to make your reservations for a hotel for the Devil Pup weekend.  (Attendance at graduation is a must for family and friends to celebrate with your pup and to provide transportation home.)  Try for Oceanside or Carlsbad if you want to be close to Camp Pendleton.   As we get closer to camp, you will receive a detailed letter about directions to camp and what to expect when arriving there.  Graduation is always on a Saturday (July 29 this year) and it always starts promptly at 12 noon.  Be there early!

Pup Candidates:  If you have not already gotten them, please get some high-top tennies now and get them broken in.  It is not a good idea to take new tennies to camp.  Do NOT spend a lot of money on them - they will likely be trashed when camp is over!  Here is a photo of acceptable tennies - good for hiking, etc.

Also, since each candidate for camp must provide $100 of his own earned money, it's time to start working on that now.  Get together with a mentor if you need help with jobs.  We have the Marine Corps League standing behind us for much of this activity. Please turn in your money to Les Covey, Assistant Liaison Rep, as soon as you have earned all of it.  Put it in an envelope with your name on it.

Parents: Prior to camp time, I will put together a Parent Contact List so you will all have phone numbers for other parents.  We find this is helpful for many reasons, but especially if an emergency happens at the last minute and you have to find a way home from camp for your pup.

Pups, remember that these instructions are important and we do make note of your efforts.  Practices will continue and are equally important now so we can get you more prepared for DEVIL PUP CAMP!  Woohoo!!

Congratulations!!

We have a message from Sgt. Bryce Lewis, Devil Pup Liaison Rep:

"PFT tomorrow morning. This one is for all of the marbles, so if they want to go, show me Saturday."

Correction to former message:  No ruck march tomorrow.

27 May 2017 - Devil Pup Rummage Sale

DEVIL PUP CANDIDATES:  It's here this weekend - our annual fund raiser for the Southern Utah Devil Pups program.  Please be at Lin's Market parking lot on Sunset at 7:00 a.m. to help people who will be bringing items for sale and helping with set up.  Assistant LR Les Covey and Jim Haney will be bringing tables from the Elks Lodge to use for set up and sorting of items.  This is a mandatory event for all candidates - if you have work that conflicts, please let either Jan, Les or Bryce know.  The sale will go from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (or noon if we sell out quickly).  Lunch will be provided for Devil Pups and DP Staff.  We will want each of you to be alert to shoppers and also to help them with pricing and loading into their cars if necessary.

This sale has been advertised to all veteran groups, the D.A.R. as well as on Facebook, so we expect a good turnout.

If you, your family and/or friends have items to donate for our sale, please bring the items when you arrive for set up on Saturday morning at Lin's.  For questions, contact Les or Jan Veltkamp.

27 May 2017 - Devil Pups Rummage Sale

Devil Pup candidates and families:  We have a Devil Pup rummage sale coming up.  The Marine Corps League Marines help with this major fundraiser for our program.  The rummage sale will be held in Linn's parking lot on Sunset on 27 May 2017 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (or noon if we sell out).  Please bring any items you would be willing to donate for the Devil Pup program to the sale site at 7:00 a.m.  The Marines will supply tables for setting up rummage items and we will need help placing, selling and watching over the tables.

All Devil Pup candidates are required to attend this event to assist with unloading, loading and selling items.  If you have a very good reason for not attending, please contact Sgt. Lewis.  Please arrive by 7:00 a.m.  If you have questions, please contact Donna Toole at dtoole at sunrivertoday dot com - (you know how to e-mail that e-address).

For Marine Corps League, D.A.R., VCSU members and friends, we very much would appreciate any items you could donate to the rummage sale to send our 2017 candidates to Camp Pendleton for Devil Pup camp July 20-29.  Other than a $100 earnest money contribution by each selected pup candidate, the program is free to the family so we must raise enough to send 6 to 10 teens (our quota for 2017) to camp.
